ISTD Connections (2010) Concept 1.

This brief is called, 'the train standing at platform two.'

It is about 'a journey of connections.'

I find the ISTD briefs slightly confusing at times and unsure if I interpret the in the correct way - but i guess that is what makes each response to brief different.

I started by trying to associate connections, journey and typography.

I came up with the concept of using the ampersands - as this is a conjunction sign that connects words. I have being going round in circles a bit coming up with different ideas of how I can use this concept.

I decided to start making a typeface based on ampersands.

I creating this handwritten style font by drawing it the same way an ampersand is drawn. I often forgot how it was drawn and worked out it was because you started at the bottom, without taking the pen of the paper, it feels like you are drawing back to front in a way.

So my letters have been drawn, starting at the bottom right corner of the letter, and without taking the pen of the paper and no overlapping lines.

I created this using a Graphics Tablet - which i should use more often.

The next step for my concept was to connect the ampersand to Journey. I did a little bit of research and found, there is alot of history behind it. The drawings directly above this text show a kind of evolution of the ampersand. This could be considered the journey.

I then wanted a way of bringing it all together. Allowing me a variety of contexts to place my typeface. I started to look into connection more, people as a subject is something that is always going to interest me. So I though about ways that people can connect, and using Ampersand, as a quirky gift/package that supplies you with ways to connect.

Branding the concept.

The earlier symbols have a chinese symbol feel to them, which i want to move away from really.
