HG Wells...

This one is with a different brush - I feel it has a slightly embossed feel to it. This could look quite good with a spot colour of foiling on top of it.

I experimented with different line weights and brush shapes. I quite like the contrast in line widths in some of these designs - it adds depth to the letterforms. Becuase the typeface is made up of lines, it may get lost against a coloured background, so I need to look into ways of making the typeface jump out a bit more.

I started by creating simple outlines of the shapes, with intention to add detail later on. The curves need alot more work, but this is something that will take time and I just wanted to have rough idea before paying attention to detail. I am unsure if this font will work in font lab, as all the letterforms are open glyphs. Whenever I have used font lab in the past, the shape needs to be continuous - which is understandable really. But this is more of a headline/illustrative font so details that Font Lab may pay attention to are not as important here.

Here you can see the start of my typeface. It is not completely clear But each letter is made up of a set of three lines. I chose to base my typeface on the number three, as I felt the reference to different classes of society was a regular occurrence or a basis of this set of books.

So, I am submitting this brief to D&AD. I am re-doing my design, but based on the same concept. I rushed this piece last time as I set it as a day brief. My concept is to create a three class typeface - so looking at creating letterforms that are split into three sections. I have some drawn designs that I will upload next week.
